The Stories We Tell Ourselves (And How to Rewrite Them)

December 26, 2024

The most powerful stories aren’t in books or movies. They’re the ones we tell ourselves.

We all have an inner script playing in the background. It tells us who we are, what we’re capable of, and what’s possible. For many of us, these scripts sound like:

I always give up when it gets hard.

I can’t be trusted with food.

I’ve never been good at staying consistent.

These aren’t facts. They’re stories.

The good news? Stories can be rewritten.

Start by recognizing your old script. Write it down. Say it out loud. Then, challenge it. Ask yourself: Is this 100% true? (Hint: it’s not.)

Once you’ve challenged it, rewrite it. Try this:

• Old story: I always give up.

• New story: I am learning to stay consistent, even when it’s hard.

It sounds simple, but every time you practice this, you chip away at the old narrative. Over time, the new story becomes your reality. You’re not stuck with the story you’ve been telling yourself. You’re the author. Pick up the pen.
