The meta…

The world is not going to change for you. And you aren’t likely to change the world. So focus on the people, places and things around you. Focus on what actually matters.

One of the struggles I often see with clients is a sense of hopelessness when it comes to the world around us. Be it the impending fall of democracy or economic collapse or disasters in other countries, they feel the impact intensely. And this leads them to turn to food as a method of comfort.

In reality, tragedies have always happened and always will. The wonders of technology have created a window into every global happening in real time. We have lost the veil of illusion and the ability to ignore tragedy on a global scale. Yet, our personal martyrdom does nothing to help.

Sure, I may grow more nihilistic by the moment but that doesn’t mean I’ve given up. In fact, understanding that I’m utterly meaningless in this vast universe has allowed me to focus on cultivating a small universe of my own where there is great meaning. Focusing on my relationships, my community, my profession. Focusing on what matters.

It’s a big world. And as clichéd as it sounds… we should all strive to think globally and act locally.

You punishing yourself with old coping strategies that no longer serve you helps no one. But using that energy and devoting it to your neighbor or friend or loved one or coworker can make the biggest difference on Earth.
