Think global act local

We often look at the struggles of the world and feel overwhelmed and as if we just don’t know where to begin. We start to look at our own lives and think, ‘man this is trite, my problems are so meaningless”. And we aren’t wrong. In the grand scheme of the Universe all of our problems and even our existence is rather meaningless.

But the Universe is different than our universe. Big U cares little for the struggles of our daily lives. There are far too many tragedies and injustices for Big U to worry about us. Little u, however, cares deeply about you. I look at little u as the universe we have created around ourselves. Our family and friends and immediate community. These all care deeply for your well being. Big U cannot thrive without little u.

We cannot help others without first making sure our own house is strong. Focusing on our own mental, physical, and emotional health is paramount to creating a stronger structure. As we build up our little universe, as we make it stronger, we can better help to strengthen the moral integrity of the Big U. And we can help to create systemic change. But it all starts with you.

I’ve oft spoke of the inherent dangers of tribalism when it comes to food and exercise, even when weighed against the advantages of belonging. We desperately seek to be a part of something greater and as religion wanes societally we gravitate towards other social forms of tribalism.

I strive to be a critical thinker. To really dissect a problem or challenge and to find out what the root cause may be and start formulating a plan of action. But at what point does this contemplation become rumination?
