Sometimes the wrong decision is right

We’ve been so conditioned to place a moral value on food that we can instantly differentiate between “good” and “bad” choices. Everyone knows ice cream is bad and spinach is good. But what if we removed those labels? What if we just looked at the utility?

While there are usually reasons we label foods good and bad, low calorie nutrient dense foods are often looked at as bad and ultra palatable high calorie foods bad, the reasons are based mostly on perceived caloric density. But we’ve all seen memes of salads that have more calories than a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. So perhaps our perception of good and bad is flawed to begin with.

Regardless of our perception, we can probably agree that spinach is most likely going to be a better choice for fat loss than ice cream. If… we are looking at it strictly in terms of calories. But what if that ice cream helps you to stay adherent to a plan over a longer period? What if a little ice cream leads to a lot of spinach?

Be open minded around food choice, not if it will get you in trouble of course. But if you can manage portion control then sometimes a “bad” food can spark benefits. Look at the totality of your situation from behaviors to feelings and environment before making a judgement on a food. Sometimes the wrong choice can be right.
