Cooking is a craft

Learn to cook, learn to cook well

Cooking is a keystone habit that can make a world of difference when embarking on nutritional change. Keystone habits are those that lock other habits in place, much in the way a keystone in masonry holds an archway together.

Yes cooking saves money and helps to control what we put in our food, but it is so much more than that. Cooking is a skill, a craft. Learning to cook, and cook well, provides a sense of pride around our meals. Creating a beautiful plate to share with loved ones is a unique joy. It’s what makes holidays so important that we will spend days preparing food for a rather short experience.

Cooking can also be a great practice in mindfulness. Knife work, the smells of individual ingredients, tasting for flavor and balance, envisioning a final product; cooking requires presence.

Take a cooking class (it’s a great date idea), buy some cool books, watch a YouTube video. There are more options than ever to learn.

Cook. Cook often. Cook with love. Cook with presence. And go from chore to craft.
