Ikebana: the art of flowers and war

June 15, 2020
The art of flower arranging, also known as kado, is considered a dignified accomplishment in Japan. It has been historically studied by generals who used the discipline to calm the mind and prepare for the rigors of battlefield decision making.

History shows us many paths to greatness. Look for clues. The order and discipline inherent to Ikebana is also a calming force. How can we apply that to our own lives?

We have very little control, if any, over the world around us. What we can control is our reaction to it. Disciplining the mind through creative means is a practice in life management.

Flower arranging is just a representation; we can all find our own outlet. Painting, practicing an instrument, martial arts or yoga are all creative pursuits that can build discipline. Set aside time and practice. Practice. Practice. It is in the practice that you build competency. And as you build competency you build confidence. And in turn an increase in discipline.

Find your own ikebana. Take a class or course. YouTube your way into a new pursuit. And always know that discipline is not reserved for warriors, it exists inside all of us. Sometimes it’s the gentle arts that develop it best of all.

I love coaching. I love the challenges it provides. And I love those breakthrough moments when clients realize it’s been them all along. Sometimes, though, a client will spend more and more on coaches to lean on rather than learning to stand in their own.
