Saving up bandwidth

January 31, 2023

Think of coaching as an investment rather than an expense. While it will cost you some time (& money) initially, what you gain can be exponential.

One of the biggest challenges with coaching (from a client perspective) is the desire to “please” our coach. While this can definitely have benefits from an external motivation perspective, it can also have drawbacks.

We are conditioned in the west to turn everything into competition. We want to win coaching. One of my favorite meme-jokes is one that talks about winning therapy. It’s ridiculous but it def holds a little nugget of truth. So as clients we tend to only want to show our best side and feel guilty when we can’t give our all to the process. We look at the process as an expense that will only be worth it for the reward.

However, the times when we “don’t have the bandwidth” for coaching is exactly when we should lean in. If we look at coaching as an investment, we look at the value we can draw from it in the future. The biggest commodity coaching gives us is time. By having an objective eye to help us identify and problem solve potential obstacles we can gain back countless hours of worry and anxiety.

Use coaching as a way to make your life easier, not harder. It might take some upfront investment but the payoff will be worth it.
