Social media inspiration…

March 26, 2023

Just a reminder that the profound quote or message you just read on social media was most likely written by someone sitting on a toilet.

It ain’t that serious…Most of us are searching for meaning. For justification. Shit, just to belong. So when we see something that resonates with us, something that confirms our bias, something that just feels right it’s easy to believe it’s the message we are meant to hear at that moment. And maybe it is…As a writer I learned early on that my work, be it essays or stories or songs, were less about what they meant to me and more about what they meant to my audience. I never explained the genesis of a song for fear that it might ruin what it means to the listener. I don’t ever want to take that away.

However, in an educational role in a space that encompasses behavior and health and emotion that can be a dangerous precedent. Allowing vague interpretation of messages can lead to guruism and there’s nothing helpful in that space. Yet that’s exactly what many people strive for in their social media presence.

So if you find yourself attaching a strong emotional meaning to social media posts that resonate with you, be aware of how you feel about one’s that cause you to question your bias. Are you as open to their profundity? Or do you dismiss them outright? How you interpret information is likely more about you than the messenger.

After all, it’s prob just a shit outcome. And I will not apologize for the bad pun.
