WWMD? What would Mom do?

September 30, 2020
A frequent complaint I hear from parents is that they don’t have time to prep and cook and plan meals. I can’t imagine the time constraints of working full time only to chauffeur the kids from practice to practice and home for dinner. Trying to piece together a meal before everyone falls asleep from sheer exhaustion.

However, a big issue I hear from parents is that it becomes difficult to prepare multiple meals for everyone because they all like different things. Maybe this is me being an insensitive curmudgeon but who cares what everyone wants? My mother used to tell us “this isn’t a diner. You’ll eat what is cooked or go to bed hungry.” As we got older we had the option of making our own dinner. And that is likely why my siblings and I eat a wide variety of foods and a willingness to try anything. So why would you sabotage your own progress to placate everyone else?

We have to prioritize our goals. We have to prioritize what’s important. And while time might not be on your side as a working parent, you can find ways to claw some back.

We all wish we could just eat whatever we want and lose weight. Part of why the Intuitive Eating movement has picked up steam is that it has been mislabeled as a weight loss tool when in fact it is a psychological tool to help those who are trying to recover from maladaptive behaviors around food.
