Guilt and Shame: The Hidden Roadblocks to Change

December 19, 2024

How often do you catch yourself saying, I shouldn’t have eaten that, or I’ll never get this right?

For so many of us, guilt and shame creep in when we struggle with food or health. But here’s the thing: guilt and shame don’t motivate change—they trap us. They make us feel like we’re the problem instead of helping us address the real challenges.

What if, instead of guilt, you chose curiosity?

The next time you feel like you’ve “messed up,” pause and ask:

  • What led me to this moment?
  • What was I feeling or needing?

Maybe it was stress, loneliness, or exhaustion. Once you understand the why, you can address the need instead of punishing yourself for the behavior.

Change doesn’t come from being harder on yourself. It comes from learning to understand and care for yourself. Let curiosity replace judgment—and watch how the roadblocks start to clear.
